Things About Celeb Chef Mom Cat Cora

Iron Chef star Cat Cora may be a master in the kitchen, but she seems to be handling being a busy mom of four kids just as well!  Cat and her wife, Jennifer Cora, are the parents of four boys, all from the same donor.

When she’s not busy in the kitchen or chasing after her kids, Cat is also taking on a new venture, and is bringing a barbeque food chain to the San Francisco Airport Terminal, called Cat Cora’s Q, or CCQ for short. The restaurant will offer travelers salads and wraps in addition to meat barbeque items.

Cat is well known for her skills in the kitchen, and here are 5 other interesting things about this supermom:

* Cat was born in Jackson, Mississippi, and grew up around food.  Her father and grandfather were both in the restaurant business, so it must be in her blood!

Her traditional style of cuisine is a blend of Greek and Southern accents, which stems from her roots in the southern part of the US and her ethnic background.

She co-founded Chefs for Humanity, which aims to provide emergency aid and nutritional education to people in need throughout the world.

Of Cat’s four children, her wife, Jennifer bore three of her sons, while she carried one of them.

* Cora holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Physiology and Biology from the University of Southern Mississippi

You Will Be Missed Forever!

Butch Lupinetti of Butch's Smack Your Lips BBQ has passed away. He was a big, happy, enthusiastic man. His hugs would always make you smile. He will be missed.

Here is an old blog post about Butch:

'What Kris Did Not Mention'

In her previous post, Kris talked about last weekend’s competition in New Paltz. The ride up, the hotel/strip club, the pubs, the friends, the awards…but she never got to the highlight of the weekend for her: meeting Butch Lupinetti. She fell in love with Butch’s larger than life, positive attitude when she first saw him on the now infamous Throwdown with Bobby Flay. So when I told her that he would be at the Hudson Valley Ribfest, she got very excited.

The stalking began Friday night shortly after arrival. I said “do you want to go say hi to Butch?”
“Not yet…let’s go walk by his stand…” She said.
So, we walked (stalked) by his stand and spotted Butch talking to some people.
“He’s right there, want to say hi?” I said.
“No. Maybe tomorrow.”

Saturday night we did another walk by, but Butch was nowhere in site. Sunday we were very busy with the BBQ comp and had no time to spy on anyone. But today would be her last chance…

Being the great guy that he is, Butch attended the KCBS awards ceremony. Cheering everyone that got called like they were his best friend. Walking back from the awards I said “this is your last chance ya know?”
“Let’s go.” She said, and started walking to Butch’s stand.
Two lines formed at Butch’s Smack Your Lips BBQ stand, one for ribs, and one to get your picture taken with Butch.

Kris waited with a smile.

Former RNC chief Ken Mehlman is "I’m gay"!!!

He says he realized it “fairly recently,” in Marc Ambinder’s words, which has Tammy Bruce chuckling on Twitter. Honestly, I thought the guy came out years ago. Remember when Bill Maher talked about the rumors surrounding him on Larry King’s showback in 2006? I guess you were the last to know, Ken.

He’s doing this now, it seems, because he wants to drum up publicity for the cause of gay marriage and figures that “Republican whom everyone thought was gay actually is gay” headlines will do the trick. Could be, although Ambinder’s careful to remind readers of the sort of social con initiatives that the GOP pushed during Mehlman’s RNC tenure. That won’t endear him to gay activists, and his newly public identity won’t endear him to social cons. Maybe he should have just worked for gay marriage like Ted Olson and kept his orientation private?
---------------------
Privately, in off-the-record conversations with this reporter over the years, Mehlman voiced support for civil unions and told of how, in private discussions with senior Republican officials, he beat back efforts to attack same-sex marriage. He insisted, too, that President Bush “was no homophobe.” He often wondered why gay voters never formed common cause with Republican opponents of Islamic jihad, which he called “the greatest anti-gay force in the world right now.”

Mehlman’s leadership positions in the GOP came at a time when the party was stepping up its anti-gay activities — such as the distribution in West Virginia in 2006 of literature linking homosexuality to atheism, or the less-than-subtle, coded language in the party’s platform (“Attempts to redefine marriage in a single state or city could have serious consequences throughout the country…”). Mehlman said at the time that he could not, as an individual Republican, go against the party consensus. He was aware that Karl Rove, President Bush’s chief strategic adviser, had been working with Republicans to make sure that anti-gay initiatives and referenda would appear on November ballots in 2004 and 2006 to help Republicans.

Mehlman acknowledges that if he had publicly declared his sexuality sooner, he might have played a role in keeping the party from pushing an anti-gay agenda.

“It’s a legitimate question and one I understand,” Mehlman said. “I can’t change the fact that I wasn’t in this place personally when I was in politics, and I genuinely regret that. It was very hard, personally.” He asks of those who doubt his sincerity: “If they can’t offer support, at least offer understanding.”
---------------------
I couldn’t care less either way, but with all the buzz lately about new conservative support for gays — here’s the latest surreal episode in the Coulter/Farah HomoCon saga, incidentally — this is a bracing reminder that an openly gay RNC chief probably would still be a problem. Or would it?

Ashley Bell The Next Linda Blair

Young actress Ashley Bell is taking starring in a scary movie to a whole new level, by playing a possessed girl, Nell, in the new film, The Last Exorcism.

Back in 1973, Linda Blair made an everlasting name for herself by playing another young devilish girl, Regan, in the original Exorcist film.  To this day, anytime I see a photo of Linda Blair I think of that movie and how badly it scared me. I probably shouldn’t have watched it as an 11-year old kid.

I don’t know that Blair will ever be able to shake the label of “the little girl from the Exorcist.”

Is Ashley Bell the Linda Blair of today’s generation?  Will people remember her face 30 years from now?

Ashley’s character in the movie is a 15 year old girl who is from the backwoods of Louisiana, and despite being possessed she is deeply religious.  In order to get into character, Ashley prepared for the role by visiting Baptist churches and talking to people about the religion, and she also studied exorcism books and even listened to tapes of live exorcisms!  One thing’s for sure, Ashley may be young, but she definitely doesn’t scare easily!

The Last Exorcism opens on August 27th.  Time will tell if yet another child actress will make an iconic name and face for herself with this horror flick!

Chicago O Hare UFO leaked news footage

A video surfaced in the spring of 2007 showing an unedited pre-interview discussion of the Chicago O’Hare Airport UFO sighting between Jon Hilkevitch (the Chicago Tribune transportation reporter who reported the Chicago UFO story) and Jim Wagner a news anchor with CLTV, a 24 Hour news channel in Oak Brook, Illinois.

The video shows both men having an off-air discussion about the amount of international media reaction to the UFO story as well as discussing United Airlines alleged “flip-flop” on the event and the FAA’s explanation as “weather phenomenon” that according to Hilkevitch’s sources “just doesn’t wash.” Hilkevitch also mentions that photographs were possibly taken by a pilot with a digital camera and that the story is “the most read story in the history of CT.com (chicagotribune.com)” with almost a “million hits.”

Miss Universe 2010- Mexico Jimena Navarrete crowned Miss Universe

A 22-year-old woman from Mexico has been crowned Miss Universe after beating out 82 competitors at the Las Vegas pageant on Monday evening.

Jimena Navarrete of Guadalajara was first to answer an interview question and the last of 83 contestants standing in the headline-grabbing pageant on the Las Vegas Strip.

Her one-strap gown flowed behind her while she walked as she held it out like a cape. Earlier, she smiled in a violet bikini as she confidently strutted across the stage.

Asked by Olympic gold-medal figure skater Evan Lysacek how she felt about unsupervised internet use, she said the internet is important but parents need to be careful and watch over their kids.

“I do believe that internet is an indispensable, necessary tool for the present time,” she said. “We must be sure to teach them the values that we learned as a family.”

First runner-up was Miss Jamaica Yendi Phillipps, while second runner-up was Miss Australia Jesinta Campbell.

Navarrete won a package of prizes, including an undisclosed salary, a luxury New York apartment with living expenses, a one-year scholarship to the New York Film Academy with housing after her reign, plus jewelry, clothes and shoes fit for a beauty champion.

Campbell won the Miss Congeniality Universe award. Miss Thailand Fonthip Watcharatrakul won Miss Photogenic Universe and a second award for having the best national costume.

Police surround Philippines hostage bus by Mynardo Macaraig

MANILA (AFP) – Philippine security forces on Monday moved in on busload of Hong Kong tourists who were being held hostage by an armed ex-policeman, but there were fears the captives had all been killed.
Multiple gunshots were heard moments before the heavily-armed police approached the bus in Manila's historic tourist district just after nightfall.

The gunman, former senior police inspector Rolando Mendoza, said moments before the police assault that he had shot two of his captives and would kill the others if police did not move back.

"I shot two Chinese. I will finish them all if they do not stop," he told the Radio Mindanao Network about 10 hours into the hostage drama, being played out on national television and international news networks.
"I can see a lot of SWAT (special weapons and tactics police) coming in. I know they will kill me. They should all leave because anytime I will do the same here."

Nearly an hour after the police approached the bus and smashed its windows, they were unable to get inside the vehicle.

There were no clear signs of movement from within the bus, raising fears the gunman armed with an M-16 assault rifle had delivered on his threat to kill his captives.

Fifteen tourists from Hong Kong were believed to be on the bus when police moved in.

The Filipino driver jumped out of a window and escaped just before police approached, while nine other hostages including children were released throughout the day.

The hostage drama began when Mendoza boarded a bus in Manila's tourist district in a desperate bid to clear his name after being discharged for extortion in 2008.

Philippine authorities said 22 tourists from Hong Kong were originally on board the bus, including children, as well as the local driver and two other Filipinos.

Seven of the tourists, including three children and an elderly man, as well two Filipinos, were released at various times throughout the day.

Mendoza, 55, was honoured by police chiefs in 1986 as one of the top 10 officers in the country. But he was discharged in 2008 for his alleged involvement in drug-related crimes and extortion, according to police.
"He wants to be reinstated in the service," Manila district police chief Superintendent Rodolfo Magtibay said early in the day.

Mendoza had posted a series of written messages on the windows of the bus, one of which read: "Big mistake for big wrong decision", apparently in reference to his sacking.

Joseph Tung, executive director of the Travel Industry Council of Hong Kong, said the tourists on the bus were aged between four and 72. They were on a three-day tour with Hong Thai Travel and were scheduled to return to Hong Kong late Monday.

"We have never had anything like this before -- we are very much concerned," Tung said in Hong Kong.
The identities of the hostages have not been disclosed.
The bus was parked in front of a grandstand at Rizal Park, a popular tourist destination just a few blocks from police headquarters.

China's foreign ministry said that its embassy in the Philippines and Hong Kong authorities were in close contact and had already sent personnel to the scene of the siege.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and China's embassy in the Philippines has already made urgent representations with the Philippine embassy in China and relevant Philippine authorities, urging the Philippine side to actively seek the safe rescue of the Hong Kong tourists taken hostage," it said in a statement.

Monday's bus hijack recalled a similar hostage-taking in 2007, when a troubled civil engineer armed with a grenade took over a bus and held 30 children but freed them after a 10-hour standoff with police.
The 2007 drama took place near Manila city hall, just off Rizal Park.

Monday's hostage-taking also added to a fast-growing number of attacks of foreigners in the Philippines.
Gunmen shot dead a South Korean man in a separate attack on Monday morning in another section of Manila. Police said the incidents were not related.

Last month, an American, a South African, a Briton and their Filipina partners were killed in spate of murder-robberies in Angeles City north of Manila. The alleged killer was arrested. ( original story here )

Swiss Family Robinson (Vault Disney Collection)

The Disney touch is all over this grand, colorful version of the Johann Wyss adventure of a European family set off for the new world of New Guinea. The film opens on a ship jostled and torn by a raging storm while a family struggles to make it through alive. Tossed into a reef near a deserted tropical island, father John Mills takes charge and the family soon turns their island prison into a veritable paradise. Their multilevel tree house, built in record time, is complete with running water and a working pipe organ scavenged from the ship, while their grand yard is abloom in English roses. As a tale of hardship and pioneer pluck, the tale is pure fantasy, but as entertainment it’s energetic and appealing. The island is impossibly populated by ostriches, zebras, lions, and elephants, a private zoo that delights the youngest boy and offers plenty of comic relief. The two older brothers discover even wilder life when they rescue the prisoner of oriental pirates (led by hard-bitten Sessue Hayakawa). There’s little real danger anywhere in the film–even the climactic battle with the pirates is a cartoonish affair, with coconut bombs and nonlethal booby traps, until the final desperate, deadly moments. Hardly a faithful adaptation of the novel, but a lush, beautifully photographed film and an entertaining adventure safe for all ages. Dorothy McGuire costars as the proper, worry-prone mother.

David Blaine

David Blaine (born David Blaine White; April 4, 1973) is an American illusionist and endurance artist. He is best known for his high-profile feats of endurance, and has made his name as a performer of street and close-up magic.  He has set and broken several world records. Theatre owner James Nederlander as well as The New York Times have referred to Blaine as a modern day Houdini.

Blaine was born David Blaine White in Brooklyn, New York and is of Puerto Rican descent on his father’s side, and Russian Jewish on his mother’s. His mother, Patrice Maureen White (1946–1995), was a school teacher living in New York, and his father William Perez was a Vietnam veteran. When he was four years old, he saw a magician performing magic on the subway.

This sparked an interest in Blaine. He was raised by his single mother and attended many schools in Brooklyn. When he was ten years old, his mother married John Bukalo and they moved to Little Falls, New Jersey, where he attended Passaic Valley Regional High School. He has a half-brother named Michael James Bukalo. When he was 17 years old, Blaine moved to Manhattan, New York.

On May 19, 1997, Blaine’s first television special, David Blaine: Street Magic aired on the ABC network. According to The New York Daily News, “Blaine can lay claim to his own brand of wizardry. The magic he offers in tonight’s show operates on an uncommonly personal level.” When asked about his performance style, David explained, “I’d like to bring magic back to the place it used to be 100 years ago.”’   Time Magazine commented, “his deceptively low-key, ultracool manner leaves spectators more amazed than if he’d razzle-dazzled.”  The concept of focusing on spectator reactions changed the way that magic has been shown on TV. The New York Times wrote, “He’s taken a craft that’s been around for hundreds of years and done something unique and fresh with it.”  He is also tied up with Filipino Magician Timothy Patrick Navarro, a.k.a. B, for close up magic. They share magic tricks and do street magic in U.S. and other countries.

In Magic Man, Blaine is shown traveling across the country, entertaining unsuspecting pedestrians in New York City, Atlantic City, Dallas, San Francisco, Compton, and the Mojave Desert recorded by a small crew with handheld cameras. Jon Racherbaumer commented, “Make no mistake about it, the focus of this show, boys and girls, is not Blaine. It is really about theatrical proxemics; about the show-within-a-show and the spontaneous, visceral reactions of people being astonished.”  USA Today calls David “The hottest name in magic right now”

Jonathan Cheban: ‘The Spin Crowd’

The Spin Crowd’ stars Jonathan Cheban and Simon Huck are saying that they work well together only because they are temperamentally so different. The PR people from the public relations firm reality series from E! has become vastly popular since it first aired in February and Cheban claims that they had only dreamed of such popularity when the pilot went into air on his B-day.

Cheban told Popeater: “The pilot actually aired the day of my birthday, so we were watching it at Phillipe at my birthday dinner. I was so overwhelmed. But it wasn’t until the next day, when the numbers came in, that it really hit me how many people were actually watching.”

Huck joins in saying that it was a crazy time for them. He adds that the idea originated some three years ago and they had in fact prepared two different pilots for the show.

On the question of their difference in personalities, the lanky Simon Huck claims that that very difference is the secret of their success- “Yeah. Our personalities are so different, but that’s why we work so well together. At the end of the day, I usually let the craziness go on and move forward.”

And both of them are equally elated to have Kim Kardashian as the Exec Producer of the show, too.

Egg Recall List

Many parents are confused about the current egg recall, especially since the recalled eggs from Wright County Eggs were sold under so many different brand names across the country. Remember that these eggs may be contaminated with Salmonella and could cause diarrhea and other salmonella symptoms if eaten.

Do you have recalled eggs, which now include 380 million eggs since the egg recall was expanded today? You might if you bought eggs with the brand name:

  • Albertsons in dozen and 18-egg cartons size large eggs in California or Colorado
  • Bayview in 5-dozen egg cartons size large eggs
  • Boomsma's in dozen egg cartons size large eggs
  • Dutch Farms in dozen egg cartons size large eggs distributed at Walgreens stores in Iowa, Minnesota, Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, South Dakota and Arkansas, although the majority of Dutch Farms eggs are not affected by the recall
  • Farm Fresh in dozen and 18-egg carton size M to  Jumbo eggs
  • Hillandale in 18-egg carton size XL eggs
  • Kemps in dozen egg cartons size large eggs
  • Lucerne in dozen and 18-egg cartons size large eggs (Safeway store brand)
  • Lund in 6-egg, dozen and 18-egg cartons size M to Jumbo eggs
  • Mountain Dairy in 5-dozen egg cartons size medium eggs
  • Mountain Dairy in dozen and 18-egg cartons size large eggs
  • Nulaid in 5-dozen egg cartons size medium eggs
  • Ralph's in dozen and 18-egg cartons size large eggs
  • Shoreland in dozen egg cartons size XL and Jumbo eggs
  • Sunshine in dozen egg cartons size XL eggs
  • Sun Valley in 5-dozen egg cartons size medium eggs
  • Trafficanda in dozen egg cartons size M to Jumbo eggs

You can also check the Julian dates, which range from 136 to 225, and the plant numbers, including P-1026, P-1413, and P-1946, to see if your brand of eggs were recalled. The label will be in the format of plant number followed by the Julian date, such as P-1946 223 (see the image above).  You can also see this list of affected brands and descriptions of recalled eggs for more information.

Recalled eggs were sold at a variety of stores, including Food 4 Less, Foodsco,  Ralphs, Walgreens,  Safeway and a number of other stores. Keep in mind that the recalled eggs could also have been a part of egg dishes, cakes, and other foods that contain raw or undercooked eggs that were served in restaurants that had the recalled eggs.

You should be especially careful and be sure to check labels if you bought any of these brands of eggs in California, Colorado, and Minnesota, where many of the Salmonella cases have been discovered, although experts are also investigating cases in Arizona, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, North Carolina, Nevada, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Texas.

To be safe, in addition to not eating recalled eggs, parents should be sure that their kids don't eat raw or undercooked eggs or foods that contain raw or undercooked eggs. Parents should also be careful to discard cracked or dirty eggs, keep eggs refrigerated at less than or equal than 45˚ F,  and to not keep eggs at room temperature for more than two hours.

Facebook Places Goes Live On The iPhone. Check-In While It’s Hot (If You Can)

At Facebook’s Places event earlier tonight, they noted that their iPhone app would be updated tonight with the new check-in functionality. Sure enough, here it is. Though the App Store update alert hasn’t kicked in yet, if you go to the actual page and redownload it, it should be the latest version (version 3.2).

As you can see, the new Places area is front and center in the app. Clicking on it brings up a list of your friends who have recently checked in to various places. Clicking on those friends shows more details about the place they are at.

Friend check-ins are sorted by those friends who are nearby and those who are elsewhere. Your stream will now show these Places check-ins as well.

One thing that’s oddly tricky is actually checking-in yourself. I seriously cannot figure out how to do it right now. Lemme know what I’m missing. We were told it may be a while before the full funtionality rolls out to the app, so perhaps Facebook is holding some small element back for the time being. [Update below from Facebook]

Still, on the touch.facebook.com version of the site the functionality is working and seems much more obvious.

You’ll also notice that Facebook has changed the Inbox icon on their new app. And to make room for Places, the Notes element of the app has been moved on to the second page.

Again, you can find the latest version of the app here — sadly, it’s only available for U.S. users for the time being.

Update: A number of people in the U.S. are also reporting seeing messages that Places isn’t available in their area yet. It appears that Facebook is slowly rolling this out. Stay tuned.

Update 2: I’ve just spoken with Facebook and they informed me that even though the app is live, the Places functionality isn’t rolled out to everyone just yet. That’s why some people see the message that it’s not available in their area — and why others can’t yet check-in. Facebook wants to make sure their servers can handle the load that is inevitably coming so it will be a roll out over the next day or two I’m told.

Here are some quick pictures of what the new app looks like:
